What is Form 1099?

If a business pays at least $600 for services rendered to them during a year, they are required by the tax laws of the United States to submit a form 1099 for every contractor. Since the name “1099” has been always used, it is now being used to refer to those contractors being paid themselves.
Since there are many organizations or businesses that have to file 1099s every year, almost reaching thousands, these payers who have to file more than 250 Form 1099 reports have to file them with the IRS electronically. Should the business or organization reach the requirement of 250 forms or more, the payer is also required by the IRS to submit a copy of the form 1096, which is a form used to summarize the information on forms that are submitted to the IRS. One 1096 form is required for each type of information form that is issued by the payer. By accessing the IRS website, you can download blank form 1099s as well as the instructions on how to use the form.
